“You can't connect with a car without being hurt badly,” said Vivian Ross, 93, of Port Angeles, who also is known as Lorraine.
She was listed in satisfactory condition Thursday after she was struck by a southbound passenger car as she walked eastbound in the crosswalk across Race Street near Civic Field at about 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Ross had a real estate office for 32 years and served as a member of the Port Angeles City Council from 1970 to 1978.
She also served on both the city and Clallam County planning commissions.
The car that hit her was driven by Don Hales, 69, also of Port Angeles.
Port Angeles Police Sgt. Glen Roggenbuck said there was no sign that drugs or alcohol was a factor in the wreck. The collision remained under investigation Thursday.
Darlene Hales of Port Angeles said her husband was “totally devastated” by the collision.
“We've been praying [for Ross],” she said.
Don Hales was not available for comment.
Race Street was closed for about two hours after the wreck.
Police interviewed Don Hales at the scene. A possible criminal charge or traffic infraction is pending, police said.
Calls to Ross' granddaughter and friend were not immediately returned.
Darlene Hales, who was senior pastor at the Lower Elwha Assembly of God Church for 20 years, said she and her husband remain active in the ministry.
“He and I did music,” she said.
“We used to be professional entertainers. Then God got a hold of us and called us into the ministry.
“We've known so many because of people of that. We've been getting lots of phone calls.”
