No one was injured in the 3:21 p.m. slide, but a woman watching an otter play in the water was startled by the falling dirt, rocks and trees, said Port Angeles Police Officer Mike Johnson.
The mass of debris continued to move across the path and toward the water at 3:45 p.m., covering about 50-60 feet of path and threatening to slide into Port Angeles Harbor.
There was no estimate for when the path would reopen, Johnson said.
“The bank is still not stable,” he said.
Port Angeles city park crews arrived at about 4 p.m. to assess the slide and will begin removing the debris when the area has settled.
Trail users can take a detour around the slide via North Francis, Front, and Lincoln streets, until the trail is cleared and the slide stabilized.
