DUNGENESS — A car wreck in Dungeness resulted in the death of one person when the car crashed into a tree.

The driver was identified as Gaze J. Durst, 78, of Sequim.

No cause of the crash has been determined by investigators with the Clallam County Sheriff's Office Traffic Unit, said Chief Criminal Deputy Ron Cameron this morning.

Clallam County Fire District No. 3 was dispatched about 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Cays and Lotzgesell roads for a report of trees on fire, said Patrick Young, fire district spokesman.

“While fire units were en route to the scene, secondary 9-1-1 reports stated that a passenger vehicle had struck a tree and was on fire,” Young said.

When firefighters arrived, they found a car fully engulfed in fire at the base of the tree.

The fire had spread to trees and brush surrounding the car.

While the fire was being controlled, a victim was located inside the car, Young said.

After a brief search around the crash site, no other victims were located.
