Fire leaves Port Angeles family homeless

PORT ANGELES — An overnight fire left a Port Angeles family without a home, firefighters said.

Port Angeles Fire Department Lt. Kevin Denton said four people escaped the blaze at 1206 W. 19th St. before firefighters arrived at about 11:19 p.m. Monday and the fire was knocked down within 20 minutes.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation Tuesday, but Denton said firefighters are confident it started somewhere in the garage, which had flames shooting out when firefighters arrived.

“It appears the bulk of it was in the garage,” he said, though the fire was starting to spread into the house and to nearby bedrooms.

Firefighters called a second alarm on the fire, asking Clallam County Fire District No. 2 for help as they attacked the blaze from the outside.

Though firefighters were told everyone escaped, they still searched the house in case anyone was inside. No one was found inside the house, Denton said.

Once the fire was knocked down, firefighters spent the next hour and a half overhauling the fire, taking damaged items out of the garage. Denton said there was significant damage throughout the home.

The Red Cross was called to provide lodging for the family.
