NEW BRIEFS: State lawmakers to hold telephone town hall Thursday … and other items

The three lawmakers representing the 24th Legislative District will host a telephone town hall starting at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Sen. Kevin Van De Wege, D-Sequim, Rep. Steve Tharinger, D-Sequim, and Rep. Mike Chapman, D-Port Angeles,represent the 24th District which covers Clallam and Jefferson counties and part of Grays Harbor County.

Most who live in the 24th District will get a phone call at 6 p.m. All they have to do to participate is to stay on the line; to ask questions, press *3 on the phone.

Those who aren’t called can dial toll-free to join at 877-229-8493 and use the event code 116289 when prompted.

Each resident also can listen and participate by visiting vekeo.com/whdc24/ and clicking on the “Let’s Talk” tab to fillout a short form.

Sobriety support group

PORT ANGELES — LifeRing Secular Recovery will gather for its inaugural meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The support group which meets in the Wendal Room of Olympic Medical Center, 939 Caroline St., is intended forthosewho need help dealing with alcohol and other drug problems.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

The meeting will be convened by Craig Whalley, who recently returned to Port Angeles after spending 7 years in theSanFrancisco Bay Area volunteering with the LifeRing organization. He continues to serve on the group’s BoardofDirectors.

According to a news release: “LifeRing bears much similarity to Alcholics Anonymous in some respects, but offersadifferent approach without a ‘spiritual’ element or a program of ‘steps’ … its meetings are intended to provide asafeand supportive place for sharing with peers the challenges of recovery.”

Superintendent survey

PORT ANGELES — To aid in the process of selecting a new superintendent, the Port Angeles School District has createdan online survey.

The survey is designed for district staff and community members to provide their input regarding the desired qualitiesand qualifications of the next superintendent.

The survey will close Thursday, Feb. 8. To take the survey, visit www.surveymonkey.com.

At the end of the school year superintendent Marc Jackson will retire and the district has selected the search firmNorthwest Leadership Associates to assist finding Jackson’s successor.

The school board has scheduled its Thursday, Feb. 22, meeting to announce its superintendent selection.
