Port Angeles man charged following assaults

Police: Suspect punched man, hit patrol car, spit on officer

PORT ANGELES — A Port Angeles man has been charged in connection with three assaults that allegedly occurred last week at a Chevron gas station and Olympic Medical Center.

Steven Richard Parker, 31, was charged Monday with second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, third-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, fourth-degree assault and driving under the influence of alcohol.

He will be arraigned Nov. 1 in Clallam County Superior Court.

Port Angeles police said Parker punched the owner of the gas station at 601 E. First St. on Thursday afternoon.

Parker then rammed his vehicle into Deputy Chief of Police Jason Viada’s unmarked patrol car and spit bloody mucus at Officer Kyle Cooper during a blood draw at OMC, according to the affidavit for probable cause.

Police said they pinned the car Parker was driving in the Chevron parking lot to prevent him from striking a civilian to escape arrest, court papers said.

Officer JJ Smith said she found an open bottle of Jameson whiskey in the center console of Parker’s vehicle when she arrested him shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday.

Officers said Parker had an odor of intoxicants on his breath and struggled to maintain balance.

Parker is being held in the Clallam County jail on $20,000 bail.

His arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. Nov. 1.
