PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Education Foundation has announced the award of 25 SPICE grants totalling $58,266.
Supporting Projects of Innovation, Creativity and Excellence (SPICE) grants are awarded for enrichment opportunities for students in the classroom and beyond.
This year’s awards include:
• Youth Day at the Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts — $1,200, all schools, submitted by Carmen Geyer.
• International Food & Culture Club — $1,000, all schools, submitted by Allison Evans.
• Native American Cultural Immersion, $2,860, Trudy Kindler Native American Studies Fund, Dry Creek Elementary — third- to sixth-graders, submitted by Karen Doran.
• Inclusive flexible seating, $459.44, Dry Creek Elementary — fourth-graders, submitted by Lauren Bevins.
• Second Step Bullying Prevention, $1,129, Dry Creek Elementary — all students, submitted by Meghan Leary.
• GaGa Ball Pit kit, $5,925, Dry Creek Elementary — all students, submitted by Jarom Packer.
• Blazing to Improved Wellness, $1,396, Hamilton Elementary — all students, submitted by Krista Winn.

• John Cornish “Geology Rocks!” presentation, $800, sixth-graders — district-wide, submitted by Brooke Hendry.

• The Art of Literacy books, $1,717.14, Roosevelt Elementary School — first- and fourth-graders, submitted by Kathryn Hartman.
• Seattle Children’s Theatre, $3,350, Roosevelt Elementary School — third- and fourth-graders, submitted by Erika Kuch.
• Graphic novel library, $2,039.10, Stevens Middle School — seventh-graders, submitted by Rylee Horton.
• Create marching band program, $3,486 — Rich Boyd Grant for the Arts Fund, Stevens Middle School — band students, submitted by Hannah Reed.
• After school drone club, $2,498 — Joe Glatz “Rocket Man” Grant Fund, Stevens Middle School — all students, submitted by Gunnar Thomason.
• ViewSonic smart board bundle, $6,858, Port Angeles High School — social studies and English students, submitted by Stacey Sanders.
• Budget Challenge: Road Test for Personal Finance, $375, Port Angeles High School — special education, submitted by Shirlene Fitzwater.
• Interactive whiteboard technology, $3,120.39, Port Angeles High School — special education, submitted by Crystal Bennett.
• Science learning games, $348.08, Port Angeles High School — 10th-graders, submitted by Shannon Hamblin.
• Environmental science field trips, $1,500, Port Angeles High School — science classes, submitted by Adam Logan.
• Science field trips, $2,000, Port Angeles High School — Science Club, submitted by John Gallagher.
• Wireless microphone system, $2,392.50, Port Angeles High School — musical theater, submitted by John Lorentzen.
Additional grants were awarded to Stevens Middle School, to purchase micrometers for its automotive technology program, and to Port Angeles High School, to purchase tools and safety equipment for its welding program.
In 2021 Douglas and Jelieta Welcker established an endowed fund acknowledging and supporting teachers who purchase classroom supplies out of their own pockets.
2022 Welcker Fund reimbursements were awarded to Crystal Bennett, Kathleen Dadd, Carrie Davis, Jessica Day, Debbie Erickson, Stephanie Farrier, Sharon Fritschler, Lori Kramer, Erika Kuch, Dan Lieberman, Katherine Longmire, Pamela Miller, Tami Parill, Patricia Pattison, Sarah Schaefermeyer, Rachel Sullivan and Krista Winn.
