WASHINGTON, D.C. — Alfonso Gonzalez Jr. received a 2022 Presidential Award for Environmental Educators.
The annual awards recognize outstanding environmental projects performed by primary school teachers.
Gonzalez, a sixth-grade math and science teacher at Chimacum Elementary School is one of 11 recipients nationwide.
One of the achievements noted in Gonzalez’ award is the Ocean Guardian School project sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The project gets students involved in fish trapping, benthic macroinvertebrate sampling and water quality testing in Chimacum Creek and sharing the data with the Jefferson County Conservation District.
