PORT ANGELES — Four area youth were named as winners in the 2018 Spelling Bee competition.
The competition was held June 1 at the Vern Burton Community Center.
The Houghton-Mifflin Spelling Bee Wordlist was used for the event.
In the competition for fourth through sixth grades, Mikayla DeCou, sixth-grade, Dry Creek Elementary School, placed first; and Jefferson Elementary School fifth-grade student Cami Bohman took second place.
Queen of Angels School students swept the seventh- and eighth-grade category with seventh-grade Jasmine Jackson attaining first place and eighth-grader Mary Bulus-Steed placing second.
Each winner received a Bee Trophy and a gift bag.
Before the competition, finalists and alternates were selected from participating classrooms’ competitions. Alternates were invited to attend as fill-ins if the winner was unable to attend.
The event was sponsored by the Soroptimist International Port Angeles Jet Set and Friends of the Library.
