Mapes, an environmental reporter for the Seattle Times, also wrote “Breaking Ground: The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe and the Unearthing of Tse-whit-zen Village.”
She will have copies of all five of her books available for purchase and signing after the reading.

The program is designed for beginners but understanding of a starting chain and single crochet stitch are helpful.

Reading and workshop
PORT ANGELES — Alice Derry will read from “Widow’s Words: Women Write on the Experience of Grief, The First Year, the Long Haul, and Everything in Between” at 12:35 p.m. Thursday.
Derry’s presentation is part of the Studium Generale series in the Little Theater at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Derry, the college’s 2017 writer in residence, will read her essay from the book and will sign copies of the book.
The Studium is free and open to the public.
Derry will also conduct a 90-minute writing workshop after her presentation.
The free workshop for widows, widowers or others grieving the loss of an important person in their lives is limited to 15 people.
