Bunker open to teens this Friday

PORT TOWNSEND — Another free afternoon of art-making for young people in sixth through 12th grades is set for this Friday at Northwind Art School at Fort Worden State Park.

This open studio for teenagers is called the Bunker. So far this year it has opened up on a couple of Fridays per month, hosted by Northwind Art and PT Artscape from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“The Bunker is a no-pressure art space that brings together delicious ingredients: professional artist hosts, abundant art supplies and snacks,” said Northwind Art communications manager Diane Urbani De La Paz.

Local artists Dana Sullivan and Chuck Moses are the two volunteers who will welcome youngsters this Friday to Northwind Art’s Building 306 at Fort Worden. They’re among a team of volunteers who give demonstrations of their art forms at the Bunker.

Sullivan, an illustrator and writer who has authored a number of graphic novels, turned the July 7 Bunker into comics night.

“Six teens doodled, inked, snacked, and watercolored like mad,” he reported.

Free Friday Bunker nights are also set for Aug. 4, Aug. 18, Sept. 1, Sept. 15, Sept. 29, Oct. 13 and Oct. 27. Volunteer host artists include Julie Read, Kate and Sonny Flores, Chris Witkowski, Tracy Grisman and Margie McDonald.
