PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Children’s Library Choir will serenade audiences young and old with a collection of songs at First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday.
The performance at the church at 1202 Lawrence St. will be free.
“You will be wowed and inspired,” said choir director Phina Pipia. “This group of spirited singers has that special magic that will enchant audiences of all ages.”
Audiences will be treated to an eclectic selection of tunes by musical luminaries such as opera composer Georges Bizet, pop star Meghan Trainor, rock band Rush, folk singer Jonathan Richman, poet Moondog and David Bowie.
“My goal was to introduce these singers to music that would truly inspire them,” Pipia said.
“Of course, the best part is that the kids have introduced me to a ton of new tunes, and I’m in turn getting to learn their favorite genres, styles and artists.”
The choir is made up of 20 singers ages 4½ to 14 years old. The musicians have been rehearsing for the past 10 weeks in preparation for the performance. The choir is accompanied by a local pianist, Jennifer Pipia.
The young singers bring a vibrant energy to every piece of music, said those involved in the preparation.
“My favorite day of the week has been driving three girls to choir practice, singing full out songs from my childhood,” said choir parent Tami Hunter.
“It has been a truly exciting process,” Phina Pipia said. “These kids have brought so much enthusiasm to the rehearsals — eagerly requesting songs, asking if they can dance to the music and even making stylistic suggestions for each piece. I couldn’t have imagined a cooler group.”
The Children’s Library Choir is a long-held Port Townsend tradition, founded by Dahti Blanchard in the early 1990s.
Phina Pipia revived the group in 2015 as a free musical resource for local youths.
The program is made possible by the Friends of the Port Townsend Library.
