Concert pianist to perform at Candlelight Concerts

PORT TOWNSEND — Tony Lu, a concert pianist, will perform during a Candlelight Concert at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The series, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 609 Taylor St. in Port Townsend, also will be simulcast on KPTZ FM 91.9 and stream at www.trinityumcpt.org.

The concert is free, although a donation of $15 per person is requested.

Half the proceeds will benefit the Yea Music!, whose mission is “to provide youth of East Jefferson County with musical opportunities including instruments, instruction and performances.”

Lu will perform a selection of original piano transcriptions of works by Beethoven, Gluck, Schubert, Schumann, Faure and Brahms, and he will introduce each piece with a brief historical background.

Lu holds a master’s degree in piano performance from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., and bachelor’s degrees in mathematics, history and music from Bennington College in Bennington, Vt.

He serves as a faculty member at Sonata and Summer Sonatina International Piano Camp in Bennington, Vt., where he teaches music history, theory, classical improvisation, musicianship and piano literature.
