Duo to perform at Salish Sea Early Music Festival

PORT TOWNSEND — The Salish Sea Early Music Festival will present “Renaissance Psalms, Irish Baroque and Folk: Three Centuries of Folk Song” at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Oleg Timofeyev and Jeffrey Cohan will perform at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1020 Jefferson St. in Port Townsend.

Admission is by a $20 to $30 freewill offering at the door; youths 18 and younger will be admitted free.

Timofeyev will play renaissance lute and seven-string guitar, and Cohan will play renaissance, baroque and eight-keyed flutes.

The program will open with settings of Psalms and variations on folk melodies from the early 17th century by Jacob Van Eyck, Nicolas Vallet and others performed on renaissance lute and flute.

The second part of the program will feature the baroque flute and the 18th century English guitar in performances of folk tunes from Scotland and Ireland, as interpreted by the early 18th century composers Francesco Barsanti, Turlough O’Carolan, James Oswald and others.

The program will close with variations on folk music by the virtuoso flutists and guitarists of Beethoven’s day, performed on an Eastern European seven-string guitar and an eight-keyed flute.

Timofeyev is a guitarist and lutenist known for his work in the discovery, promotion, interpretation and authentic performance of the 19th and 20th century Eastern European seven-string guitar. He has a master of arts degree in early music performance from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and a doctorate in performance practice from Duke University in Durham, N.C.

Timofeyev is one of the most prolific Russian guitarists living outside of Russia and, to date, he has released 12 albums on international labels.
