Fair, festivals and more this weekend on Peninsula

The Clallam County Fair, music festivals and a street fair in Port Townsend highlight weekend entertainment options on the North Olympic Peninsula.

The Clallam County Fair continues through Sunday at the Clallam County Fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16th St. in Port Angeles. Food, exhibits, fun and games are scheduled along with rodeo events and a Sunday demolition derby. • The Soundcheck Music and Arts Festival is set for a variety of venues across Port Townsend from Thursday through Sunday.

The festivities include a Lindy Hop dance class this afternoon at Tyler Plaza, open air performances of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Chetzemoka Park, the 32nd Uptown Street Fair on Saturday, family movies on Fort Worden and at the Port Townsend Public Library, a burlesque show at Brigid’s Loft, social justice poetry at the American Legion Hall and music in many locations.

• Eden will perform at the Summer Concert series at 7 p.m. Saturday at Olympic Cellars Winery, 255410 U.S. Highway 101.

Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased at www.olympiccellars.com/summer-concert-series.

Eden is a rock/blues/pop band composed of vocalist Savanna Woods, Aaron Hiebert on electric guitar, Jason Edwards on drums and Ethan Gibbons on bass.

The band plays original music and covers from the 1960s through today, including Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Welfare for Animal Guild.

• Olympic Music Festival will continue its 41st summer season at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden, 200 Battery Way, Port Townsend.

Tickets are $40 per person, $15 for students, and are available by calling 360-385-9699 or visiting www.olympicmusicfestival. org.

The season includes 10 classical music performances ending Sept. 8.

This weekend’s performances feature violinists Evan Johanson, Joseph Maile, Coco Mi and Angela Wee; violists Juan-Miguel Hernandez and Luther Warren; cellists Annie Hyung and Matthew Zalkind; and pianist Julio Elizalde.

Saturday’s program, Folk Melodies and Dances, includes Jean Francaix’s String Trio (1933); Beethoven’s String Quartet in C major, Op. 59 No. 3, “Razumovsky;” and Brahms’ Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25.

Sunday’s program, Orchestral Soundscapes, includes Grażyna Bacewicz’s Quartet for Four Violins (1949); Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor, Op. 57; and Mendelssohn’s Octet for Strings in E-flat major, Op. 20.

• Sway Wild, a San Juan Island-based duo, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Palindrome at Eaglemount Cidery, 1893 S. Jacob Miller Road, Port Townsend.

Sway Wild, an indie-folk duo composed of Dave McGraw and Mandy Fer, explores the corners of rock, pop, funk and folk.

The band was formed following a two-month sailing voyage through the remote anchorages of British Columbia and released its eponymous debut album in 2019.

Sway Wild pairs Fer and McGraw’s harmonies with Fer’s electric guitar work.

Fer, who plays both rhythm and lead on a Fender Stratocaster, also tours as the lead guitarist for Amos Lee and Allison Russell and has recently performed with Brandi Carlile.

• The 32nd Uptown Street Fair will celebrate the eclectic spirit of Uptown Port Townsend on Saturday.

The fair will feature live music, entertainment, food, arts and crafts and kids’ activities.

Lawrence and Tyler streets will be closed for public safety.

• The Sequim City Band will present “Movies, Musicals and Marches” at 3 p.m. Sunday at the James Center for the Performing Arts at Carrie Blake Park, 506 N. Blake Ave., Sequim.

The program will feature music from movies, Broadway musicals and a march by John Williams.

The concert will open with Williams’ “Olympic Fanfare and Theme,” which was commissioned for the 1984 summer Olympic games in Los Angeles.

The band will then move into medleys from the scores of “Apollo 13” by James Horner and from “The Pirates of the Caribbean” by Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer.

It will close with Broadway music including music from “Evita” by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Songs from “Guys and Dolls” and the “Tuba Tiger Rag.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket, a shade umbrella, pack a cold drink and a snack and find a spot on the lawn in front of the James Center stage.

• Mia Torres will perform from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at the Old Alcohol Plant Inn, 310 Hadlock Bay Road, Port Hadlock. No cover charge.

• Marc Ensey will perform from 7 to 10 tonight at Joshua’s Restaurant, 113 S. Del Guzzi Drive, Port Angeles.

• The Port Angeles Friends of the Library will host a Bag of Books sale from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Port Angeles Main Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles.

Bags will be provided, and customers will be able to purchase as many books they can fit into the bag for $5.

Customers also may bring their Friends of the Library canvas tote bag and fill it for $3.

The Friends of Library’s book bags also are available; customers may buy a bag for $8 and fill it for free.

Proceeds will benefit special programs hosted by the North Olympic Library System.

• The Clallam County Genealogical Society will conduct a fundraising rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m Saturday at the society’s research center, 403 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles.

The sale will feature new used books, children and baby items, collectibles, tools, art, jewelry, fishing and boating gear, kitchen and household items, Christmas items, hobbies, toys and small appliances.

• Ted Lund will demonstrate how to turn a two-handled, ovaloid platter at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Lund will address a meeting of the Strait Turners woodturners club at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.

Turners of all levels and those who wish to learn about the hobby are welcome.

• The Port Angeles School District, in partnership with Lutheran Community Services, will conduct its 16th Back to School Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Jefferson Elementary School, 218 E. 12th St., Port Angeles.

Students who attend will get a good start on preparing for the upcoming school year that begins Sept. 3: a haircut, a backpack filled with school supplies, and their pick of shoes, socks and a coat.

The event and everything in it is free. No identification is required — all families and students are invited to attend.

Sodexo Food Services, the district’s food contractor, will serve a free barbecue lunch.

• Backyard Movies at the Fort will host a free outdoor screening of “Akeelah and the Bee” at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

The annual film series will be shown on Littlefield Greens adjacent to the McCurdy Pavilion on Fort Worden.

The 2006 film tells the story of Akeelah, a young girl on the verge of quitting school, who discovers that she has a high aptitude for spelling and enters a spelling bee contest.

The Backyard Movies are sponsored by the Port Townsend Film Festival, Fort Worden Hospitality and the Friends of Fort Worden.

• The 12th All County Picnic, which offers information about resilience and emergency preparedness in East Jefferson County, is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, 3907 Landes St., Port Townsend.

The annual event put on by The Production Alliance aims to combine a neighborly outing with connections to information and resources before a crisis happens.

Chef Arran Stark will prepare a free ratatouille from all-local ingredients for picnickers to enjoy.

The picnic features an emergency simulation at 2 p.m. at the Rotary Pavilion with presentations by the Jefferson County Department of Emergency Management, East Jefferson Fire and Rescue, the Port Townsend Police Department, Jefferson County Public Utility District #1 and Jefferson County Public Health.
