Foolishness the topic of Friday story slam

Short, true sagas to be told

PORT ANGELES — “Fools” is the theme of the next Out Loud Story Slam, a gathering of true-tale tellers and listeners this Friday.

The venue for this latest installment of the story-slam series is Studio Bob, the large gallery space upstairs at 118½ E. Front St., where admission will be $10 with cash and credit cards accepted. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show, and refreshments will be available for purchase.

A story slam, organizers Jeanné Sparks and Nessa Goldman have said, is a friendly competition among storytellers who present short, true sagas drawn from their own lives. Listeners are strongly encouraged too, they’ve said, and there’s no pressure to be a teller.

As for Friday night’s “fools” theme, “perhaps there was a time you did something silly, put your foot in your mouth, or misjudged your audience. Or maybe you were the one witnessing it all, or pulling the wool over someone’s eyes. As always, our themes are open to your interpretation,” Goldman and Sparks write in their invitation.

“Get creative, get silly, don’t be afraid to be foolish, and get on stage,” they said, adding stories can be up to five minutes in length.

At the beginning of the evening Friday, prospective storytellers may drop their names in the bag. Then comes a series of drawings for the people who get to step up and tell their tales.

Those who are thinking about participating as storytellers are encouraged to contact the Out Loud Story Slam organizers at olypenstoryslam@gmail.com.

“It’s extremely helpful to know who/how many intend to tell at the events,” Goldman and Sparks said.

“If you have been thinking about telling but would like a little more guidance, feel free to reach out.”
