Magician to highlight magic of reading at Clallam libraries

As part of the North Olympic Library System’s annual Summer Reading Program, Jeff Evans will be performing “Reading Magic” at all four North Olympic Library System locations.

On Monday, the Sequim Branch Library will hold his first performance at 10:30 a.m. on the outdoor stage behind the library at 630 N. Sequim Ave.

In the event of inclement weather, the Sequim event will take place in the Sequim Middle School Gym, 301 W. Hendrickson Road.

The Port Angeles Main Library performance will follow on Monday evening at 6:30 at 2210 S. Peabody St.

On Tuesday, Evans will perform at 1:30 p.m. at the Forks Branch Library, 171 Forks Ave., and offer a final performance at the Clallam Bay Branch Library, 16990 Highway 112 at 4 p.m.

Evans’ career in magic began from a book of coin tricks he read when he was 12 years old. Evans is a perennial favorite with NOLS audiences, according to a news release.

The theme for the 2018 Summer Reading Program is “Libraries Rock.”

This summertime celebration, which encourages children to keep reading during the summer break from school, features a reading challenge and a multitude of events for all ages.

Research shows that children who do not read during the summer experience “summer slide” and may lose up to a month of the instructional knowledge they gained during the previous school year.

Library summer reading programs have been shown to help alleviate the “summer slide” by providing access to books, enrichment activities and encouraging young people to keep reading.

The NOLS 2018 Summer Reading Program started June 16 and will run through Aug. 18.
