PORT TOWNSEND — The public is invited to join Meaningful Movies Port Townsend for the screening of a new documentary, “Plane Truths,” at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
The film will be shown at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (QUUF) Sanctuary, 2333 San Juan Ave., co-sponsored by North Olympic Sierra Club, QUUF Green Sanctuary Committee and QUUF Social and Environmental Justice Council. Admission is free.
The special guests at this screening will be the filmmakers of “Plane Truths,” Whidbey Island-based Mark Dworkin and Melissa Young and a panel of community experts, including Navy captain and former assistant White House press secretary Brian Cullin, organizers said.
U.S. military policy is changing, putting more emphasis on the Pacific as part of the “pivot to Asia,” according to a news release from organizers that added that “as the Navy expands operations around Puget Sound, it is challenging health, safety and quality of life in the region, and people are speaking out in opposition.
Some community members on Whidbey Island, the San Juans and the Olympic Peninsula are disturbed by noise caused by new EA-18G “Growler” jets based at Naval Air Station Whidbey (NAS), and a proposed expansion of test flights.
Some complain of water system pollution caused by chemicals used for firefighting on NAS landing strips.
“Plane Truths” explores a variety of perspectives on these issues from farmers, current and retired military personnel, environmentalists and other residents of the affected areas.
The film is one in a series of Meaningful Movies presented at the QUUF Sanctuary the second Monday of the month. Each one is followed by community discussion.
