Music, first responders part of weekend festivities

Concert series, a first responder event and master gardener workshops highlight this weekend’s events on the North Olympic Peninsula.

• Good Day Sunshine will perform at the Summer Concert series at 7 p.m. Saturday at Olympic Cellars Winery, 255410 U.S. Highway 101, Port Angeles.

Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased at www.olympiccellars.com/summer-concert-series.

Good Day Sunshine, formerly known as Crème Tangerine, performs the music of the Beatles and classic rock and pop hits.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County.

• The Unity of Effort celebration returns to Sequim from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Security Services Northwest, 250 Center Park Way, Sequim.

Gates will open at 10 a.m. and helicopters will begin landing at 10:15 a.m.

Security Services Northwest has hosted the community celebration to honor and recognize military, first responders, law enforcement and security personnel for more than 20 years.

New this year, the Ride to Unity motorcycle rally will arrive around 10:45 a.m. with motorcyclists from across the state.

In addition to the aerial displays, vendor and community group booths will be on site.

The event also will feature a police K9 demonstration by the Port Angeles Police Department. Due to the presence of K9 officers, attendees are asked to leave pets at home.

Food vendors will open at 11 a.m., a wine and beer garden will open at 1 p.m., and live music will be performed throughout the day.

Additionally, Bloodworks Northwest will conduct a blood drive during the event.

The family-friendly celebration includes bounce houses, face painting and a toy find.

• Sequim Prairie Nights is back for its seventh year from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on Washington Street between Sequim Avenue and Third Street in downtown Sequim.

The annual car show is open to all street rods, hot rods, classics, muscle cars, trucks and vintage motorcycles.

George and Alan McMurray of Tri-Mac Speedsters, Sequim residents and Bonneville Speed Week participants, will show the motorcycle they took to the Bonneville Salt Flats.

There will be several raffle drawings throughout the day with proceeds benefiting Sequim and Port Angeles high school scholarship funds.

Attendees are requested to bring unopened jars of peanut butter for the Price Ford Peanut Butter Drive.

• Second Saturday Art Walk is set from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at participating Port Angeles businesses.

The 8th Street Emporium, 238 W. Eighth St., will host Nancy Shores demonstrating the use of a peg loom, a basic form of weaving that can be used with a variety of yarns, recycled fabric, sheep fleece and even plastic bags to create items such as rugs, wall hangings, seat pads, blankets, mattress covers and wearable art.

Harbor Art Gallery, 114 N. Laurel St., will host a reception for featured artists Haley and Lance Snider. Throughout August, Haley and Lance will exhibit works that showcase a variety of mediums and materials, including driftwood, wire, watercolor swatches, charcoal and pastel, all with an underlying theme of music.

Harbor Art Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Studio Bob, 118½ E. Front St., will host an opening reception for its fifth Bring Your Own Erotic Art Show. The annual art show will be on display through Aug. 31.

The Hub, 117 N. Lincoln St., invites the public to watch its resident artists create art in its workshop during the Art Walk.

Participants also are welcome to bring their own easel or drawing pad and hang out in the entertainment area to work on their own material.

Second Saturday Art Walk is sponsored by the Port Angeles Arts Council and the Downtown Waterfront District.

• Olympic Music Festival will kick off its 41st summer season at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden, 200 Battery Way, Port Townsend.

Season passes for nine concerts, which include only one performance of Beethoven’s Complete Cello Sonatas on either Aug. 24 or Aug. 25, are available for $324.

This weekend’s performances feature violinists Evan Johanson, Coco Mi and Wonhee Bae; violists Vicki Powell and Luther Warren; cellists Jennifer Culp amd Annie Hyung; and pianists Julio Elizalde and Amy Yang.

Saturday’s program, Classical Masters, includes Haydn’s String Quartet in B minor, Hob III:68; Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E-flat major, Op. 70 No. 2; and Mozart’s String Quintet in G minor, K. 516.

Sunday’s program, American Legacy, includes Harry Thacker Burleigh’s Four Southland Sketches for Violin (Viola) and Piano; Dvorak’s String Quartet in F major, Op. 96, “American;” and Florence Price’s Piano Quintet in A minor (1936.)

• The Music on the Strait festival finale, Joyce Yang and Friends, will start at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Donna M. Morris Auditorium at Field Arts & Events Hall, 201 W. Front St., Port Angeles.

Tickets are $25 to $50 each, $10 for students, and are available at www.musiconthe strait.com.

The show will begin with Yang performing a selection from Preludes for Solo Piano by Sergei Rachmaninov.

Yang will be joined by James Garlick, violin; Ayane Kozasa, viola; Paul Wiancko, cello and glockenspiel; and Efe Baltacıgil, cello, for the remainder of the program, which includes “K’Zohar Harakia for Viola and Cello” by Judd Greenstein; “Closed Universe for Solo Cello, Piano Quartet & Glockenspiel” by Paul Wiancko; and Antonin Dvořák’s Piano Trio in E minor, Op. 90 “Dumky.”

Tonight’s performance, “Richard O’Neill plays Bach, Dohnanyi and Wiancko,” at Maier Hall is sold out, but it will livestream at https://youtu.be/iaFTHFMAztE.

Both performances will be preceded by a pre-concert talk with Lisa Bergman at 6:15 p.m.

• Les Arrivants will perform at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Palindrome at Eaglemount Cidery, 1893 S. Jacob Miller Road, Port Townsend.

The Montreal-based trio consists of Israeli-born Amichai Ben Shalev, playing the bandoneon, a type of concertina; Jordanian Abdul-Wahab Kayyali, playing the oud, a short-necked, pear-shaped fretless instrument similar to a lute; and Iranian-born percussionist Hamin Honari.

The band members merge their individual backgrounds in Arabic classical, Argentine tango and Persian classical music and combine them with the international flavor of their new home in Montreal.

The group formed during the COVID-19 lockdowns and its repertoire reflects the highs and lows of their resettlement experiences and the uncertainties of the COVID pandemic.

• Dumpster Joe and The Boys will perform from 8 to 11 tonight at Bourbon West, 125 W. Front St., Port Angeles. No cover charge.

• DJ Jean Bettanny will play music for a variety dance from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday in Brigid’s Loft, 280 Quincy St., Port Townsend. Bettanny will provide a free Merengue lesson beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 per person.

• Jack Dwyer and the Rodeo Dendrons will play from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday for the Second Sunday Social Dance at Quimper Grange, 1219 Corona Ave., Port Townsend. Admission is by donation.

• Buck Ellard will perform from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday in Spirits Bar and Grill at the Old Alcohol Plant Inn, 310 Hadlock Bay Road, Port Hadlock. No cover charge.

• Black Diamond Junction will perform from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, Sequim. Admission is $12 per person, $10 for lodge members.

• Game Night for Teens is set from 6 to 7:30 tonight at the temporary location of the Sequim Branch Library, 609 W. Washington St., Sequim.

The after-hours event is for teens only. Free pizza and snacks will be served.

Teens can play Splatoon 3 on the Nintendo Switch, board and card games from the library’s collection or bring in their own favorites.

• The Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic will host its 17th Fun Walk and Health Fair at 9 a.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 Blake Ave., Sequim.

Registration for the 5K run/walk through Carrie Blake Park opens at 8 a.m.; the one-mile course of years past also is available.

Attendees can visit the Health Fair after the walk for free screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar and oxygen saturation.

Participants also can familiarize themselves with an automated external defibrillator or explore the health and wellness information and services provided by local service providers.

Pets are welcome but must be on leash during the walk and will not be allowed inside the health fair; the clinic will have pet sitters available at the fair.

Proceeds will benefit the free health clinic, which offers basic urgent care and chronic medical care for the uninsured and underinsured in our community.

Clallam County master gardeners Jan Bartron, Bob Cain, Laurel Moulton and Audreen Williams will lead the Second Saturday Garden Walk from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Fifth Street Community Garden, 328 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles.

This month’s walk will focus on recognizing and dealing with allium ailments and also growing and harvesting tomatillos.

The master gardeners also will share more water conservation tips for vegetable gardens.

• The Friends of the Sequim Library will conduct a book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Friends’ storefront location at Rock Plaza, 10175 Old Olympic Highway, Sequim.

The sale features books of interest to teachers, craft books and Pacific Northwest books.

The sale also features a $1 bag sale in the annex area beginning at noon.

The Friends will provide $20 coupons for teachers, whether public, private, parochial or home, at this month’s sale; the coupons will be valid at both the August and September sales.

• The Friends of the Jefferson County Library will conduct a book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Hagen Building adjacent to the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., Port Hadlock.

The sale features used books, audiobooks, DVDs and music CDs.

All proceeds benefit the library district.

• The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tournament will be from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Forks Branch Library, 171 S. Forks Ave., Forks.

Pizza and light refreshments will be provided at the free, inaugural tournament for teens and tweens.

The champion wins a Smash Bros. poster and a trophy.

• Nita Webster will present “Welcoming Pollinators” at 12:15 p.m. Saturday in the Humphrey Room at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., Port Hadlock.

Webster, a Jefferson County master gardener, will discuss how to attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators in order to cultivate a thriving ecosystem.

Webster’s lecture will be followed at 1 p.m. by the Jefferson County Master Gardeners’ monthly “Ask a Master Gardener!” plant clinic.

• The Port Angeles Community Players’ Children’s Theatre will preview its summer show, “Murder Most Fowl,” at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Port Angeles Main Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles.

The play is a murder mystery in which Detective Barnard and Officer Robin DeBeak must figure out who murdered Lord Bawkington.

Attendees also will learn about opportunities both onstage and behind the scenes.

The full production will be presented on stage at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse on Aug. 23-25.
