Night to Shine prom is tonight in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Night to Shine, a prom for people with special needs ages 14 and older on the North Olympic Peninsula, is tonight — and a few more spots are available.

The prom will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Vern Burton Center, 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The second annual prom is free but guests must preregister.

Space is limited to 125 guests and 125 volunteers who will act as companions or buddies.

“We have all the volunteers we need and we have about 120 guests lined up,” said Cheryl Smith, director of programs at Camp Beausite Northwest of Chimacum.

“We could use more guests,” she added.

To obtain guest registration forms, call 360-775-5693 or send an email to clallamnts@gmail.com.

Forms also can be picked up in Port Angeles at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 205 Black Diamond Road.; at Clallam Mosaic, 301 E. Lopez Ave., Suite 4; and at The Crossing Church, 43 O’Brien Road.

Hillcrest Baptist Church and The Crossing Church — with community partners Clallam Mosaic, Camp Beausite and Wilderness Escapes — will join more than 450 churches around the world to host Night to Shine, sponsored by the Tim Tebow Foundation.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate our friends, neighbors and family members with special needs, a chance for them to dress up, have a night on the town and make friends and memories in a safe and fun setting,” said William Gullick, pastor at Hillcrest and chairman of the event.

Every guest of Night to Shine enters on a red carpet complete with a welcome from a friendly crowd and paparazzi.

Once inside, guests receive the royal treatment, including hair and makeup stations, shoe shining areas, corsages and boutonnieres, a catered dinner, dancing and prom favors, all leading up to the moment when each guest is crowned king or queen of the prom.

During the evening, a Respite Room is provided for parents and caretakers complete with dinner and massages.
