PORT ANGELES — Two weeks prior to participating in two festivals in Chicago, the Northwinds Homeschool Band will present a free community concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The concert will be at Independent Bible Church 116 E. Ahlvers Road.
The Tuesday concert is in final preparation for the band’s upcoming trip to Chicago, organizers said.
Under the direction of Director Dan Tutton, Northwinds will participate in the nationally recognized WorldStrides OnStage International Heritage Festival, held in Chicago in early April.
In addition to the Heritage Festival, several Northwinds students will perform in the WorldStrides OnStage Festival of Gold on April 8, with a select few invited to join other students from around the United States in an honor band.
The Festival of Gold will take place at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Hall, home of the Chicago Symphony. All band students will participate in musicianship clinics as part of the festival experience.
In January, the Northwinds Homeschool Jazz Band 1 competed in the 1-A Division at the Clark College Jazz Festival and placed second overall. A band record of five individual Northwinds students were awarded Outstanding Musicianship Awards at the Vancouver, Wash., event.
The Northwinds Homeschool Band is comprised of homeschool students from the Port Angeles and Sequim areas and rehearses twice weekly in Port Angeles.
