Olympic Theatre Arts to host ‘Spoon River’ auditions

SEQUIM — Olympic Theatre Arts will conduct auditions for “Spoon River Anthology — Perspectives” on Saturday.

Auditions will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Olympic Theatre Arts, 414 N. Sequim Ave., in addition to those already held Thursday.

Six performances are planned. “Spoon River” will open Friday, March 3, and run through Sunday, March 12, with shows Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

The rehearsal schedule will be decided when the cast meets for the first time at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24.

Written by Edgar Lee Masters and adapted and directed by Merv Wingard, “Spoon River” is not a play in the usual sense (i.e., with a beginning, middle and end).

It is, according to Wingard, a series of poetic vignettes, each one to three minutes long, that express 36 individual perspectives on life: his or her heroism, tender relationships, heartaches, love affairs, loneliness — the way that life expresses itself through each.

The vignettes are held loosely together by some general themes: marriage, religion, war, poetic insight, but mostly by the personalities of the characters themselves and their stories.

The production will have nine actors — five men and four women — plus a soloist and pianist.

“If you do the math,” Wingard said, “you will see that each actor will have three or four characters to present, and there will be a lot of freedom for the actors to create these characters.

“From the actor’s point of view, this should be acting candy — a chance to create several quite different characters in small cameo performances.”
