Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra concert set for Sunday

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Tigran Arakelyan, will present its December concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Chimacum High School auditorium, 91 West Valley Road.

In addition to the concert, there will be an open dress rehearsal at 7 p.m. Friday.

The concert is free; donations are welcome.

The concert features, Carl Reineke’s Flute Concerto, Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide and the Northwest Premiere of Adrienne Albert’s Courage.

Some seasonally inspired pieces include The Winterlust Polka by Joseph Strauss, the Christmas Waltz by Tchaikovsky, Winter Night (Sleigh Ride) by Frederick Delius and an encore performance of Holiday Hoopla by the PTSO percussion section.

Guest soloist is Victoria Symphony principal flutist Arin Sarkissian. Winner of Montreal’s La Vireé Clasic competition, he was named by the CBC as one of the “30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30.” Frequently called upon as a soloist, he has played with Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, Ottawa Chamberfest and the National Arts Center of Canada.

Award-winning composer and singer Adrienne Albert worked with Igor Stravinsky, Leonard Bernstein and Philip Glass. Her works have been performed in the U.S. and worldwide with commissions for Harvard Westlake School, Palisades Virtuoso and the Pennsylvania Academy of Music. Her music has been recorded on the MSR, Naxos and Navona labels.
