Second Saturday Art Walk offers demonstrations, artwork

PORT ANGELES — The Second Saturday Art Walk offers free demonstrations and exhibits throughout Port Angeles.

• Studio Bob’s Second Weekend on Saturday and Sunday will feature painter and sculptor Daniel Miller.

“A Piece of Me: Art by Daniel Miller,” will be on display at Studio Bob, 118½ E. Front St., from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, with live music by Tin Sandwich, and from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Miller lives in Port Angeles where he devotes his creative energies to painting and sculpting fantasy figures from wood, organizers said.

“He was a standout at the Bring Your Own Art Show at Studio Bob last January, selling all three paintings that were submitted for the show,” according to a press release.

Born in North Carolina to a military family, Miller grew up in various U.S. states as well as in Germany and Japan.

“This exposure to multiple cultures instilled a broad and versatile aesthetic as well as a love of art from an early age,” the release said.

After graduating high school he began his professional career as a silversmith, then goldsmith, painter and sculptor, visual designer and art director.

After a move to Austin, Texas, for the goal of finding his way into the film industry, he created sculptural elements for many major films, soon moving on to Los Angeles. His film credits include “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre II,” “Honey I Shrunk the Kids,” “007 License to Kill,” “Stargate,” “Coneheads,” and “Chronicles of Riddick” to name a few.

Other large-scale sculpture installments were completed for themed environments around the globe. Some notable examples are “The Lost City” in South Africa, “Venus Fort” in Tokyo, and “Fountains of the Gods” at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Casinos in other states as well as Las Vegas display his work, such as the Luxor, Mandalay Bay and the Winstar (Oklahoma).

With the advent of the digital revolution, Miller taught himself computer 2D and 3D skills, including animation. These tools led to contributions as a concept artist and matte painter for film and the video game industry.

• One of a Kind Art Gallery, 115 E. Railroad, Suite 105, is celebrating the work of local painter Valle Nevaril during the month of May.

Nevaril will be painting live from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.

She is the longest-running artist at One of a Kind Art Gallery, having shown her work in the space for over 10 years.

The beauty of the landscapes has been her choice of subject matter in her oils, acrylic and watercolor painting.

A Port Angeles native, Nevaril has been active in the local art community for the past 35 years. Her work has been featured in several local galleries, banks and other businesses in Port Angeles and Sequim.

Nevaril was a member artist of the Clallam/Waterfront Gallery for over 25 years until its closure. She has been a member of Sequim Arts, now known as Olympic Peninsula Art Association, for 30 years.
