Sekiu Fun Days, Day of Play set this weekend

The annual Day of Play, plus plays and Sekiu Fun Days will take place across the North Olympic Peninsula this weekend.

• Opening reception for “Beauty and Resilience” from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

The event is free, with donations welcomed. Light refreshments will be available for purchase.

The exhibit also will be open from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday during the Port Angeles Second Saturday Art Walk.

The exhibit is based on the removal of the Elwha and Glines Canyon dams and the subsequent restoration of the Elwha River ecosystem.

Beauty and Resilience combines 32 pieces of art in a variety of media, including photography, weaving, wood carving, dried flora and fauna, oil painting and mosaics.

Most of the works on display will be available for sale.

The exhibit will be on display in the Esther Webster Gallery at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays through Sept. 8.

• The Port Angeles Community Players will stage a production of “The Curate Shakespeare As You Like It” with shows at 7:30 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Tuesdays and matinees at 2 p.m. Sundays through July 28 on the main stage at the Port Angeles Community Playhouse, 1235 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Tickets are $18 per person, $9 for students at www.pacommunityplayers.org or at the box office 30 minutes before each performance.

The play, written by Don Nigro, is about a theater company’s struggles to bring Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” to the stage.

• Ghostlight Productions will present “Jesus Christ Superstar” with shows at 7 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Thursdays with matinees at 2 p.m. Sundays through July 27 in the auditorium at Sequim High School, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

The 1970 rock opera, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, tells the story of the final weeks of Jesus Christ’s life, as seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.

The cast and crew, all members of the community, include Anna Pederson, director/choreographer; John Lorentzen, music director; Jeremy Pederson, Jesus; Mark Lorentzen, Judas; and Shahida Shahrir Mellon, Mary Magdalene.

• 41st Clallam Bay – Sekiu Fun Days are scheduled for Friday through Sunday in downtown Clallam Bay and at the Sekiu Community Center, 42 Rice St., Sekiu.

Festivities start with the Art Show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Sekiu Community Center.

The Street Fair from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday will feature handcrafted jewelry, hand-carved wooden figurines, wooden bird houses and different kinds of food.

The unofficial opener is the Community Potluck at 5:30 p.m. Friday in front of the bus barn in Clallam Bay.

Bring a main dish, side dish, salad or dessert and enjoy a meal, catch up with old friends and possibly make some new ones; donations are accepted from those unable to bring a dish.

• The Second Saturday Art Walk is set from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at participating Port Angeles businesses.

The One of a Kind Gallery, 115 E. Railroad Ave., will feature the oil and acrylic landscapes of Valle Nevaril.

Studio Bob, 118½ E. Front St., will host a reception for “Through a Modern Lens,” from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

The new gallery show features iPhone photography by local artist James Lidback.

Harbor Art Gallery, 114 N. Laurel St., will feature the contemporary impressionist paintings of Andréa Woods; she will be at the gallery from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Woods’ paintings will be on display at Harbor Art Gallery, 114 N. Laurel St.. from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays throughout July.

The Hub, 117 N. Lincoln St., will feature the works of watercolor painter Todd Fisher, metal artist Will Frick, painter Baillieu Lewis, abstract painter Larry White and writer and creator Izzy Zucker from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Cabled Fiber and Yarn, 125 W. First St., will host artist Sunshine Tucker from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Tucker, a Port Angeles-based book designer, will demonstrate the art of Furoshiki wrapping during the Art Walk.

Tucker learned the Japanese art at a workshop in the United Kingdom.

Fabric pieces will be available for purchase for those who wish to try their hand at wrapping a present or a bag.

• Frank Samuelson will preview his public art piece, “Bridge,” from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Northwind Art classroom in Building 306 at Fort Worden, 200 Battery Way, Port Townsend.

Samuelson will be available to talk about his work as well as his outlook on public art.

Samuelson’s painting is part of the Washington State Arts Commission’s Art in Public Places project and will be displayed at a school in the Auburn School District.

The Port Townsend-based artist currently has 11 public artworks on display across the state; they are listed at https://www.arts.wa.gov.my-public-art-portal.

Samuelson also will open an exhibit, “Frosting the Cosmos,” at the Aurora Loop Gallery, 971 Aurora Loop, Port Townsend, on Aug. 3.

• Marva Holmes will teach a recycled materials art class from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Studio Bob, 118½ E. Front St., Port Angeles.

Holmes will present the first in a series of classes for youths 3 and older in conjunction with the city of Port Angeles’ Day of Play.

Entry is on a sliding scale of $5 to $20 per child, and children younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

Future classes, throughout July and August, will each feature a different craft, including finger puppets, picture frames and masks.

• Sturtz will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Palindrome at Eaglemount Cidery, 1893 S. Jacob Miller Road.

The acoustic quartet is composed of Andrew Sturtz, vocals and guitar; Jim Herlihy, banjo; Courtlyn Carpenter, cello; and Will Kuepper, bass.

• Big Gay Bingo, hosted by Blake McCabe, is set for 4 p.m. Sunday at Studio Bob, 118½ E. Front St.

Tickets are $30 per person and are available at www.studiobob.art.

Admission includes a glass of champagne, a bingo card and snack bar with an array of small bites.

Prizes include paired tickets to upcoming Studio Bob events, gift certificates at local businesses and recycled material art by Christopher Allen.

• Bill Evans will present dance concerts at 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday in the USO Hall at Fort Worden, 200 Battery Way, Port Townsend.

Both performances are pay what you can.

Sunday’s concert will include seven works by artists from six different states and will feature Patrick Suzeau, a performer, choreographer and professor emeritus at Kansas University.

Monday’s show will include seven different works created and performed by artists from six different states and one Canadian province and will feature Kathy Diehl, a former dancer in the Bill Evans Dance Company in New York who now heads the dance program at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, Colo.

Evans also will facilitate a site-specific work at Memory’s Vault in the Fort Worden bunkers from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s performance is in memory of Suzie Lundgren, a longtime member of the Bill Evans dance family, who died in January.

• Lowire will perform from 5 to 8 tonight at the Port Townsend Brewing Co., 330 10th St., Port Townsend. No cover charge.

• Gerry Sherman will perform from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in the Spirits Bar and Grill at the Old Alcohol Plant Inn, 310 Hadlock Bay Road, Port Hadlock. No cover charge.

• Tess Teel and the Side Hustle will perform from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Windrose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St., Sequim. No cover charge.

• DJ Jean Bettanny will play music for a variety dance from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday in Brigid’s Loft, 280 Quincy St., Port Townsend. Bettanny will provide a free Rumba lesson beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 per person.

• Rummage sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim.

The sale features items for your home, garden, clothes closet, kitchen, outdoor life, tool shed and toy room.

All items are half-price on Saturday and, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, shoppers can fill a bag for $2.

All sales are cash or check only; proceeds will benefit Clallam County charities.

• Dann May will present “The Coming Cascadia Megathrust Earthquake” at 7 tonight in the Cedar Hat classroom outside the Dungeness River Nature Center, 1943 Hendrickson Road, Sequim.

May, an adjunct professor of geology at Peninsula College, will discuss how the recent discovery of the Sadie Creek Fault, west of Lake Crescent, increases the risk for a severe earthquake on the North Olympic Peninsula.

In the event of inclement weather, the program will be moved inside Rainshadow Hall.

The lecture, part of the Evening Talk series, is free although a $5 donation to support education programs is appreciated.

• Day of Play, sponsored by the city of Port Angeles Parks and Recreation Department will occur at multiple venues in Port Angeles on Saturday.

Day of Play, which coincides with National Parks and Recreation Month, is a chance to explore local parks, engage in fun, try new activities and connect with the community.

Activities include pickleball lessons, disc golf, live music, planting stations, scavenger hunts, sailing and knot-tying lessons, recycled material art projects, a BMX open house, a bouncy house and open swimming at Shore Aquatic Center.

Passports include a map of where events are located and can stamped at each participating activity and turned in by July 19 to enter for prizes.

• Clallam County master gardeners Jan Bartron, Bob Cain, Laurel Moulton and Audreen Williams will lead the Second Saturday Garden Walk from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The monthly walks are at the Fifth Street Community Garden, 328 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles, and will continue through Sept. 14.

This month’s walk will focus on protecting fruiting crops and planning for fall and winter gardening.

Local artisans, including Art Brooks, Larry Gonzales, Paulette Hill, Linda B. Myers and Heidi Hansen, will demonstrate how they create their work.

• The Clallam County Genealogical Society will host an open house and ice cream social from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the society’s research center and library, 403 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles.

Members of the society will lead tours of the research center and discuss genealogic research.

Additionally, representatives from the Daughters of the American Revolution, the North Olympic History Center and the Sequim Museum and Arts, along with Olympic Peninsula author Glynda Peterson Schaad, will be present to discuss genealogy and local history.
