Solar eclipse broadcast

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Library will host a Total Solar Eclipse Megacast Broadcast from 8:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Monday.

The library will show a free NASA broadcast of the total solar eclipse featuring 11 spacecraft, three aircraft, more than 50 high-altitude balloons and the astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

Back to school

PORT ANGELES — The 2017 Back to School event for youths will be held at Jefferson Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Those entering kindergarten through 12th grades can receive free supplies and opportunities for the upcoming school year at Jefferson Elementary, 218 E. 12th St.

Featured at the event will be school supplies, haircuts, community service resources and additional back-to-school information.

This event is made possible by Parent Line/Lutheran Community Services Northwest, the Port Angeles School District and United Way of Clallam County.

Pro bono lawyers

PORT ANGELES — Clallam-Jefferson County Pro Bono Lawyers will present “Law at the Landing” from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The event at The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave., is intended to help the public address legal issues in one-on-one consultations with volunteer lawyers.

Volunteer attorneys will provide and assist with completing advance directive forms including a power of attorney for finances, power of attorney for medical and a health care directive.

There is an anticipated high demand for this clinic, so attendees are asked to arrive on time.

Pet Posse fundraiser

PORT ANGELES — Port Angeles Pet Posse, a volunteer-run nonprofit that reunites missing pets with their owners, plans a fundraiser at the Port Angeles Eagles Aerie on Saturday.

The fundraiser at the aerie at 2843 E. Myrtle St. will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It will include a flea market, where attendees can purchase goods to benefit the nonprofit.

Pet Posse depends on donations to continue its operation; the organization does not charge pet owners for assistance in searching and finding pets.

PORT ANGELES — Urologist Carleen Bensen, M.D., will discuss urology and diabetes during a diabetes support group meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

This group meets monthly to focus on diabetes education and health maintenance in a casual environment.

At 9 a.m., free International Organization of Standardization eclipse glasses with safe viewing instructions will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The eclipse will begin at 9:08 a.m., peak at 10:20 a.m. and end at 11:28 a.m., according to a news release.

During the peak, the sun will be obstructed by the moon at a rate of 90.4 percent, according to the release.

PORT TOWNSEND — The public is invited to take a tour on a Martha J-A 1984 24-foot motor launch today from noon to 4 p.m.

Those interested are asked to meet on the floating dock in front of the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St.

Tours are by donation and take about 30 minutes.

Tours also will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

The service is on a first-come, first-served basis, with a six-person capacity.

PORT TOWNSEND — A panel of experts from the University of Washington Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center will discuss the potential use of tidal energy during a seminar from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

The panel will present environmental, social and engineering challenges and opportunities, as well as ongoing research to understand and proactively address these issues at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St.

The seminar — which is free and open to the public — presents residents with the opportunity to gain insight about the potential energy source and ask questions.

The seminar will provide an overview of the ways energy can be harvested from wind, waves and currents; examine types of MRE technologies that are suited for Washington’s outer coast and inland waters; discuss the potential environmental impacts of MRE development and how to minimize them; and assess the economic benefits of MRE for residents.

Attendees can bring clothes sizes 5 to 12, shoes and backpacks to Chimacum Elementary School’s multipurpose room, 91 West Valley Road.

Items for donating must be clean and ready to wear.

Following the donation, attendees will receive coupons equal to the number of items donated for the swap and sale Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

During the swap and sale, coupons can be used to receive new items.

Those who did not donate can buy items for $1 each.

LA PUSH

Surfing, traditions

LA PUSH — A surfing and traditions youth camp will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at First Beach.

The camp for youths ages 10 to 18 will be held on the beach in La Push.

Parents are welcome and are asked to stay with younger children.

FORKS — The Forks Emblem Club 488 will host a prime rib dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Forks Elks Lodge.
