Students win cash awards for artwork

SEQUIM — Three North Olympic Peninsula students won cash prizes for their artwork exhibited in the High Schools of the Olympic Peninsula Creative Crafts and Arts Exhibit.

The Sequim City Arts Advisory Committee (CAAC) invited high school students across the Peninsula to submit entries for the exhibit. Of the 65 entries received, 20 were selected for the exhibit in the Karen Kuznek-Reese Gallery at the Sequim Civic Center at 152 W. Cedar St.

The exhibit, which opens today, will be on display through April 29. The gallery is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

A digital show of all accepted entries will be available for viewing on a screen from outside the Civic Center.

The top three entries were awarded cash prizes, which were donated by members of the community.

First place and $200 was awarded to Kaylie Steed, a ninth grader at Sequim High School, for her drawing, “One Who Has Loved Truly.”

Second place and $150 was awarded to Jakob Miller from the West Sound Tech program at Quilcene High School for his welded piece, “Metal Rose.”

Third place and $100 was awarded to Jaxon Taylor, a 10th grader at Quilcene High School for his ceramic “Birdman” vase.

Honorable mentions were awarded to Madison McKeown, a senior grader at Sequim High School for her floral arrangement “Skull and Antlers,” Faith Coffey, a Quilcene High School sophomore, for her charcoal drawing “Chihuahua Dog,” and Jill Adolphsen, a junior at Sequim High School, for her watercolor and ink painting of “Elephant.”
