PORT TOWNSEND — The Townsend Bay Ringers will return at 7 p.m. Thursday for their fifth appearance in the Trinity United Methodist Church Candlelight Series.
The local musicians will provide a whirlwind handbell journey around the world directed by Judy Schussler at the church at 609 Taylor St. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the concert, Ring Around the World.
Admission is a suggested $10 donation, with children admitted free. Proceeds will benefit local Port Townsend organizations and Trinity’s music and historic Victorian restoration program.
Refreshments will be served following the performance.
The Townsend Bay Ringers, Port Townsend’s community handbell choir, comprises area musicians, some of whom travel from Port Ludlow and Quilcene to rehearse for concerts in the community and performances at local churches and retirement homes.
The musical parade of nations will represent Great Britain, Russia, Japan, South Africa and South America. Selections will include “Scarborough Fair,” an English ballad made popular by Simon and Garfunkel and “Siyahamba,” a lively Zulu freedom marching song from South Africa.
The “Great Gate of Kiev” will depict a grand city gate with majestic carillon bell towers.
A lively Russian dance will include several unique bell techniques.
Sounds of the Far East will be reflected in two Japanese melodies. The journey will end in South America with a popular Brazilian folk hymn.
