Women sculptors to demonstrate their craft in Port Hadlock

PORT HADLOCK — Fifteen women stone sculptors will demonstrate their craft at a Women Artists in Action Weekend in Port Hadlock today through Sunday.

The free gathering at the Old Alcohol Plant Inn, 310 Hadlock Bay Road in Port Hadlock, is in celebration of Port Ludlow sculptor Arliss Newcomb’s 80th year.

“My birthday is in October, but I’m doing this in June when we hopefully have good weather,” Newcomb said

She said she’s hosting the event to celebrate that “I’m still beating on rocks.”

The demonstrations will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.

“We’re all going to be working,” Newcomb said. “People can see the process.”

Only handcarving will be demonstrated, she added.

On Saturday evening will be a reception for the Gallery Walk from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., she said.

Finished sculptures also will be on display for purchase.

The event is sponsored by the Northwest Stone Sculptors Association, based in Seattle. All 15 sculptors — including internationally known M. J. Anderson — are members of the nonprofit association.

“We have members from all over the world — Canada, Japan, Mexico, Italy, New Zealand, Chile and several more,” Newcomb said.

A symposium is set July 8-16 at Camp Pilgrim Firs just south of Port Orchard.

“On Saturday, July 15, the public is invited to come and see a display of over 100 pieces of stone art,” Newcomb said.
