I was appalled to read Pat Buchanan’s column “Perhaps all men are not created equal.”
That was the textbook definition of racist, right there in the Peninsula Daily News.
He didn’t even rely on the usual dog-whistle coded language.
No, he basically came right out and said that he thinks Black people are inferior, so we shouldn’t bother trying for equality, much less equity.
Apparently, in his view, the civil rights movement ended racism 50-plus years ago and put everyone on equal footing, so people of color have no obstacles anymore and any perceived discrimination or significantly worse outcomes are simply due to their inherently inferior nature.
What’s he going to write next, a column on how “separate but equal” is good for all races?
How inequality of sexes means that women shouldn’t vote, thereby solving the abortion issue?
Or maybe how you should join your friendly local KKK because it’s a great civic organization that brings together like-minded neighbors who care about their community.
It’s been said that a certain segment of our population wants to turn the clock back to the 1950s, but I’m not so sure.
Between the increasingly overt racism, the growing threats of political violence, the massive gulf between the rich and everyone else, and the continuing assault on voting rights and the election system itself, I think their ultimate goal might be something that more closely resembles the late 1800s.
Plessy v. Ferguson, here we come.
