LETTER: Prophect words from David Souter on PBS News Hour

[Retired] Supreme Court Justice David Souter on Sept. 14, 2012, on PBS News Hour spoke on the 225th anniversary of the Constitution and talked about the importance of educating young people on how their government works.

Souter warned of a Trump-like candidate and how our republic could be threatened, where a republican government wasn’t threatened by foreign invasion or a military coup but by civic ignorance.

“What I worry about is, when problems are not addressed and the people do not know who is responsible … some one person will come forward and say, ‘Give me total power and I will solve this problem,’” he said. “That is how the Roman Republic fell. That is the way democracy dies.”

Mitch McConnell said the Republicans’ job was to make President Obama a one-term president, and that’s how they’ve operated for eight years.

Before the president’s second term, on Sept. 16, 2011, Obama introduced a “jobs bill” after moving us out of the brink of a depression. The Republicans to date will not put it up for a vote because it taxes the top 1 percent and it would be a victory for the president, so the Republicans are willing to let the country down for political expediency. By definition, this is treason.

The president-elect says only he can fix it. No one before could have run for office having been married three times, taken millions from Russian sources, refused to show taxes or has a son-in-law who owns the 666 Building, Fifth Ave., New York.
