LETTER: State’s school funding law unreasonably raises taxes

When I first read about EHB 2242 (funding basic education) it did not dawn on me just how expensive it would be to the average homeowner.

Its legalese did not explain it in laymen’s terms.

This bill is an abomination.

It increases my homeowner taxes to an unsustainable level.

As near as I can tell, they will increase next year as well.

I am a senior citizen living on a fixed income and this bill may have the effect of taxing me out of my home.

Rep. Steve Tharinger voted yes.

Both Sen. Kevin Van De Wege and Rep. Mike Chapman voted no.

This is to their credit.

I realize that the schools need to be funded but not on the back of the poor and needy and senior citizens.

I am not alone in my feelings, as several of my friends have experienced the same situation.

This does not only affect seniors but it also affects the struggling parents of schoolchildren who in many cases have to work multiple jobs just to survive.

I feel that all citizens should contact their representatives and senator and urge them to take action and replace this bill with something that does not kill us financially.

I don’t know about you but I feel that this should have been put up for a public vote.

I am tired of politicians spending my money without giving me a say.

Robert Nelson,
