LETTER: Time to cull the ranks of deer

Sports columnist Michael Carman’s Oct. 12 article (“Looking For Love, Or Salt”) begins with “Deer I can do without” and goes on to cite their growing population as “a potential threat to public health.”

I would add “a threat to public safety.”

One of these days, the Peninsula Daily News will be reporting on a serious traffic encounter between vehicle and deer, resulting in injury or worse to both humans and “Bambi.”

In my west-side neighborhood, there are increasing numbers of deer invading yards, crossing residential streets and galvanizing dogs into giving chase.

Officials need to come up with a plan to relocate or cull these appealing creatures.

As Mr. Carman writes, they are “not a cute photo opportunity for charmed visitors.”
