LETTER:Monroe Field

Imagine my surprise when I read in the Jan. 28 PDN that the Port Angeles School District is building the Monroe Athletic Field, which according to the article was funded by the February 2020 capital levy.

I didn’t remember voting for this field and thus went down ballot memory lane, looking for this expenditure.

At $1.5 to 2 million, equal to 3 to 4 percent of the levy, Monroe Field is not an incidental expense, so I fully expected it to be included in the ballot measure and assumed that in my rush to support our local schools, I had simply missed it.

Well for once, my memory did serve me well and Monroe Field does not appear in the ballot measure.

Proponents of this field will state this field benefits children and children who participate in organized sports will benefit.

To them I respond that our children will benefit from fixing Stevens Middle School, something the community voted for.

James Taylor

Port Angeles

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Monroe Field was not included in the ballot measure. The board did include work on the field when it approved putting the measure on Feb 11 special election ballot in Resolution No. 1920-05.
