LETTER:Staying safe

On Thursday, the PDN published that Clallam County had reported 10,543 cases of COVID-19 and 99 deaths since the pandemic began. The population of Clallam County is 76,770 so about one out of seven residents, 13.7 percent, has had COVID-19.

Although people are tired of COVID-19, the virus is not tired of infecting us.

Clallam County is still a hot spot with over 700 cases per 100,000 population reported Friday.

An unvaccinated man in his 30s with no health risks died of COVID-19 a month ago.

The dangerous delta variant is still circulating alongside the more contagious omicron variant.

A new BA.2 Omicron variant, even more contagious and possibly more severe, has been detected.

These variants have re-infected people who have had COVID-19 previously.

I trust Dr. Allison Berry to inform us about COVID-19 in Clallam County and when it will be safe to return to normal.

Until she says it’s safe for everyone, including high-risk people, I will continue to wear my mask indoors in groups.

I am fully vaccinated and boosted but aware that others may not be.

Unvaccinated people put me at risk as well as themselves.

If you haven’t been vaccinated, do it now.

Even if you have had COVID-19 before, the vaccine will add protection.
