The purpose of my letter is to help clarify the misunderstanding that has been circulating regarding the Sequim School Board election for Position 4 between Kristi Schmeck and Virginia R. Sheppard.
I know both of these women.
Due to a miscommunication, Kristi Schmeck has been denied that post by the Public Disclosure Commission. Virginia Sheppard is running unopposed; she is guaranteed the election.
I voted for Kristi in the primary and will again in the general election.
I was elected to the Sequim School Board in 2001 served until 2006.
In the past 15 years, five board members have resigned during their terms for a variety of reasons including medical.
It is the responsibility of the board to post that vacancy, interview applicants make the final decision to fill the position.
Kristi Schmeck is the most qualified candidate that I have met in over 15 years.
Kristi’s background includes teaching at a charter school, coaching sports, teaching at both Helen Haller Elementary and Sequim Middle School.
She is currently a part of the Edge Program, using curriculum designed to help youth at the Clallam County Juvenile Detention Center.
She is a mother and a young grandmother.
I encourage the 3,025 voters who supported Kristi in the primary election to once again vote for her in the general election.
If a board member resigns, the support for Kristi during the election will be a major factor in filling the open position.
