PORT ANGELES — St. Matthew Lutheran Church will celebrate its 85th anniversary with a special worship of thanksgiving at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The service will be in the church’s sanctuary at 132 E. 13th St.
The congregation will gather in front of the church for a group picture after the service and then enjoy a potluck lunch together.
There will be a program of speakers after the meal to highlight the church’s history and reflect upon the shared experiences and milestones of its congregation.
The church was founded by a group of settlers who moved west from North Dakota during the later part of the Great Depression.
The church conducted its first worship service on July 11, 1937, in Sequim before moving on to Port Angeles where it was initially hosted by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Its first pastor, the Rev. Raymond Rimbach, was installed in January 1938.
Current and former members of the church are welcomed.
