PORT ANGELES — Master Gardener Rita Cirulis and Meggan Uecker, Clallam County solid waste coordinator, will offer home gardeners alternatives to burning yard debris this fall when they speak at noon Thursday, Oct. 13.

“Trash or Treasure: Alternatives to Burning Landscaping Debris,” an hourlong presentation, will be in the county commissioners’ meeting room (Room 160) at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Cirulis, who is recently retired from 25 years as an air quality specialist with regulatory agencies, will discuss conditions and regulations for burning yard debris as well as the impact of open burning of vegetation on the environment.

Uecker will present uses of landscape debris for gardeners that reduces the need for burning.

She will explain gardening and landscaping techniques that sequester carbon in the soil and its potential impact on soil health, air pollution and climate change. Hugelkultur, compost mounds and other techniques will be shared.

The presentation is part of the “Green Thumb Garden Tips” brown bag series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners.
