SEQUIM — The Backyard Birding series returns to Sequim at 10 a.m. Saturday with a program hosted at Dungeness River Audubon Center.
The center is at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.
Hosted by members of the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society, the monthly series of 10 classes is for local residents interested in knowing more about the wild birds they see each season and who want to develop good habitats for attracting them.
First in series
The first in the series “Landscaping for Birds,” will be presented by Joe Holtrop, executive director of the Clallam Conservation District.
Holtrop will discuss aspects of a bird-friendly yard — including food, water and shelter — with emphasis on the use of plants native to our area.
Backyard Birding can be taken either as individual classes or in a series. Cost of each session is $5. Admission is free for anyone younger than 18.
For participants completing five sessions in the series, Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society offers a free one-year membership.
Two-mile hike
From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 13, Holtrop will lead an optional two-mile hike, pointing out native plants growing at the Dungeness Recreation Area.
Preregistration for the hike is required. For more information, visit the Clallam Conservation District website at clallamcd.org/workshops.
