Caroling, flugelhorns and birding set for week

Christmas caroling, flugelhorn music and a birding lecture are among the upcoming activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

SEQUIM

Friday Readings

SEQUIM — “Family Secrets” is the open mic topic for the Fourth Friday Readings at 6:15 tonight.

The reading will be in the media room at The Lodge, 660 Evergreen Farm Way.

Attendees are encouraged to bring poems, short-short stories or memoirs and novel snippets.

Participants are advised to rehearse in advance as readings are timed.

The free event is hosted by sponsored by Writers on the Spit.

Christmas caroling

SEQUIM — Craig Buhler will lead a community Christmas caroling session from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The caroling will take place at Centennial Place on the northeast corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street.

The community is invited to come and enjoy singing or listening to favorite carols during Sequim’s Hometown Holiday festivities.

Singing ability not required.

The event is sponsored by Dungeness Community Church and Sequim Bible Church.

Organizers will provide song sheets and a canopy in case of rain.

Flugelhorn music

SEQUIM — Flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny will perform from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday

The “Jazz and Wine” performance will be at Wind Rose Cellars, 143 W. Washington St.

Matheny will showcase both original and familiar material from his recordings as part of his 100-city national tour.

Matheny, winner of “Instrumentalist of the Year” honors in the recent Seattle Earshot Jazz Golden Ear Awards, will share the stage with Seattle musicians guitarist Milo Petersen and bassist Phil Sparks.

Elks bingo

SEQUIM — Sequim Elks will hold bingo games from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Games will be at the Sequim Elks lodge, 143 Port Williams Road.

Admission is free with a minimum buy-in of $10.

Players must be 18 years or older.

Proceeds will go to Elks scholarship programs, other charities and lodge operating expenses.

Volunteer training

SEQUIM — The Dungeness River Audubon Center will host training for volunteers from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The training will be in the center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

Volunteers will explore ways to connect with visitors and learn more about how to interpret the center’s collections.

This month’s training will focus on raccoons.

Both newcomers and experienced docents are welcome to attend this free training.

SEQUIM — Novel Conversations book discussion group will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday to discuss “Anything is Possible” by Elizabeth Strout.

Birding lecture

SEQUIM — Dan Streiffert will present a lecture to the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

The lecture will be at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

Streiffert’s topic will be “Birding in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.”

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Coffee with mayor

SEQUIM — Coffee with the Mayor will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

The monthly forum will be at Black Bear Diner, 1471 E. Washington St.

This month the mayor will be joined by city attorney Kristina Nelson-Gross.

Each month, the forum meets at a different venue to offer the chance to ask questions in an informal setting.

iPhone class

SEQUIM — Sequim I.T. will host a class on how to use the iPhone from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thursday.

The class will be held at Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St.

The class will cover the basics of using a smartphone.

The recommended donation of $4, $2 for Shipley Center members, will go to the center.

Story swap

PORT ANGELES — Lindy MacLaine will be Story Swap’s featured storyteller at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

JOYCE — Crescent Bay Lions Club will host a benefit breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday.

The menu includes eggs, pancakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy, hash browns, breakfast meats and beverages.

Meals cost $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 years old or less.

Veterans will eat for free in honor of Veterans Day.

Proceeds will go to the Crescent Bay Lions for community projects.

Woodturners to meet

GARDINER — Strait Turners, a local woodturners group, will host a meeting from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The public is invited to the free meeting at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.

Scott Overby will present “Crafting of Pepper Grinders.”

Turners of all levels are welcome; those who want to learn about the hobby are also welcome.

The Strait Turners will not meet in December.

Thanksgiving cruise

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Marine Science Center will team up with Puget Sound Express to offer a Thanksgiving weekend cruise from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Passengers will cruise the waters of Protection Island Aquatic Reserve which surrounds Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge.

Naturalist Roger Risley and marine science center hosts will be aboard to assist with wildlife spotting and interpretation.

The trip leaves from the Point Hudson Marina, 227 Jackson St.

Tickets are $80; $60 for members of PTMSC, the Audubon Society, the Burke Museum or the Washington Ornithological Society.

Dance and social

PORT TOWNSEND — A square dance and social is set at the Quimper Grange from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday.

The dance will be at 1219 Corona St.

Dave Thielk will be calling and the band will be Jere Canote, guitar; Bobbi Nikles, fiddle and Jack Dwyer, mandolin.

Doors will open at 7 p.m. for a jam session with the band.

Admission is $7 per person, $5 if you arrive by bike or on foot or those who bring a reusable water bottle.

Children aged 16 years and younger are admitted free.
