PORT ANGELES — The Chimacum High School Concert Band received a Level 1, Superior rating at the Washington Music Educators Association Regional Ensemble Contest in Port Angeles.
Judge Keven Paustian praised the ensemble’s technique and precision, especially noting the musicality of the cymbal work, bass drumming and tuba playing; positions that returned to the band this year after not playing since elementary school.
The rating is especially noteworthy because Mitch Brennan, the band director, tested positive for COVID-19 two days before the contest and was unable to attend.
Maria Powell, a senior, stepped in to replace Brennan as director.
Powell served as band major during the marching season where she developed the skills needed to direct the band.
