JOHN NELSON’S LIVE MUSIC COLUMN: Old, new in live music this week

A resurrected band, a festival under new/old sponsorship, a fond farewell and a new photo are all part of the music news this week.

After almost seven years, it was time for a new photo of yours truly to perch to the right.

Port Angeles

• I’ve said several times that Tongue and Groove, that oft-resurrected band, was having its last performance. Well, ain’t saying it no more.

Tongue and Groove is coming out to play Friday at a reunion and second anniversary celebration of Bill and Tonya Swanson’s Junction Roadhouse, junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Route 112, five miles west of Port Angeles, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Their happy dancin’, foot stompin’, tie-dyeing mesh of fusion, funk and frivolity will grab you and not let you go. $5 cover.

Need a ride for this one? All Points Charters and Tours will again be providing safe transportation Friday night. Just phone 360-775-9128 to make a reservation for pickup starting at 8 p.m.

On Sunday, Barry Burnett invites you to come out early and dance to a variety of music during the open mic jam from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

On Wednesday, The Good Medicine Band with Jason, Ches and Justin, help Tonya (owner), Kurt (bartender) and John (revered patron), celebrate their birthdays from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. They’ll have their cake and eat it, too.

• Tonight at Castaways Restaurant and Night Club, 1213 Marine Drive, the Sundowners host a jam from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. These fellas really know how to have fun.

Sequim’s Turner Brothers Band makes the trip to Port Angeles on Friday and Saturday night. They’ll rock your socks off from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. $3 cover.

• Tonight, kick off the WOW weekend at Wine on the Waterfront, 115 Railroad Ave., with the Memories and Melodies Show of Charlie Ferris from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. You’ll not only enjoy the vocals but his tidbits of trivia, too.

Friday marks the return of the seductive and sultry sound of Sarah Shea and her cool jazz renditions and classics from the great American songbook at 7:30 p.m. $3 cover.

On Saturday, Impulse brings back jazz, funk and jazz fusion at 7:30 p.m. Skip Morris has put together this hot combo in tribute to the likes of Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke and the Jazz Crusaders. $3 cover.

• Dave Secord and Rosalie and the whole Luck of the Draw gang are back at the Fairmount Restaurant on U.S. Highway 101 west of Port Angeles from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the Tuesday acoustic jam. Don’t be left out.

•On Friday night, The Veela Cafe, 133 E. First St., has Jim Lind providing both rock and country, fast and slow, from his impressive repertoire, st 7:30 p.m.

• Every Tuesday evening, the Port Angeles Senior Swingers present Wally and the Boys, playing ballroom dance favorites for the dancing pleasure of all seniors 45 years plus from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Port Angeles Senior Center, Seventh and Peabody streets. $5 cover, first-timers free!

Joyce

• Hank Jernigan hosts the acoustic jam this Saturday at the Crescent Grange, 50722 state Highway 112, at 6 p.m. At 5 p.m., there is a songwriting workshop, so bring your songs for a discussion and, perhaps, fine-tuning.

The jam covers country, blues, bluegrass and gospel. Y’all come now, y’hear?

Sequim and Blyn

• Tonight, don’t miss the jam hosted by Chantilly Lace at the Oasis Sports Bar and Grill, 301 E. Washington St., from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Any Thursday night, you’ll find some of the best jammers from your favorite bands joining in the fun. Classic rock and country from the ’50s and ’60s, blues and pop from later decades are all in the broad repertoire honed over 35 years. Jammers come in early and sign in on the sign-up sheet.

On Friday, enjoy the solo side of Jim Hoffman from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Later, Thomas Sparks and Friends perform at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, following the Dice Run Charity Event, Chantilly Lace performs classic country for your dancing pleasure from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Cover.

On Wednesday, Final Approach lands with its “boomer music” from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

• At The Buzz, 128 N. Sequim Ave., Kelly Thomas hosts the very popular and rousing open mic Wednesday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

• Denny Secord Jr. goes solo at Stymies Bar and Grill at Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road, with covers of country classics Friday, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

• Tonight at 7 Cedars Casino, Blyn, in the Club Seven Lounge, Justin Kasaul-Hayes of Author Unknown and his bro Nabil perform for your dancing pleasure from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

On Friday, high-energy dance band New Jack City plays all the newer dance hits from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Saturday, The Move plays the new dance tunes with a little hip-hop thrown in from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

On Sunday, Denny Secord Jr. and Haywire make it a country Father’s Day. Maybe Dad, Denny Sr., will show up, from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Alas, on Monday, reluctantly, comes with the final Peninsula appearance of Lynn Peterson and the Phatt Kattz before Lynn returns to the Las Vegas scene.

Lynn says, “I have so enjoyed performing here on the Peninsula and will truly miss all of you.”

We will all miss her, too.

• Howly Smith entertains with songs and guitar for Father’s Day at Las Palomas, 1085 E. Washington St., Sunday at 5:30 p.m.

Port Hadlock

• Tonight at the Ajax Cafe, 271 Water St., Buzz Rogowski plays jazz and originals on piano at 6 p.m.

On Friday, Ahmad Baabahar plays soulful originals on guitar with vocals at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, Barry and Bill play your favorites at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, Jim Nyby plays blues, ballads, jazz and soul at 5:30 p.m.

Port Townsend

• On Friday at the Upstage, 923 Washington St., Slow Skate provides the dinner music at 6 p.m. prior to Comedy Night at 8:30 p.m. $5 cover with $10 minimum purchase.

On Saturday, the Upstage hosts a “Schools Out for the Summer, Schools Out Forever” party honoring teacher retirees from 8 p.m. to midnight. The wild man of Northwest blues, trombonist Randy Oxford and his renowned blues band, with vocalist Jada Ami, provide the dance music. $12 cover.

On Tuesday, the fathers of freak folk and psych folk, the Tree People, perform at 7:30 p.m. $5 cover. Phone 360-385-2216 for reservations.

• On Friday at Water Street Brewing, 639 Water St., the Paul Benoit Band plays blues, roots and Americana at 9 p.m. Cover.

On Saturday, the Sunday Evening Whiskey Club meets with some rousing country blues and bluegrass at 9 p.m. Cover.

• On Friday at 9 p.m. at Sirens, 823 Water St., hard-driving roots/blues band The Voodoo Fix doesn’t ask you to take notice: they’re telling you. $5 cover.

• At the Undertown, 211 Taylor St., Steve Grandinetti performs with vocals and piano Friday at 7 p.m.

Jenny Peterson takes the floor Saturday, also at 7 p.m.

• Take a taste of Pies on the Run and their wild and happy fiddle tunes Friday at the Uptown Pub, 1016 Lawrence St., at 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, The Low Ones will bring you up with folk rock at 9 p.m., $3.

• Next Wednesday, head for Port Townsend Brewing Co., 330 10th St., for the happiest Happy Hour with Deadwood Revival from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

• On Saturday, at Manressa Castle’s Castle Key Restaurant, Seventh and Sheridan streets, the Mack Grout Trio plays from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. $8 cover.

• Down on the Coyle at the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road, Friday, Seattle-based singer/songwriter and 2009 grand prize winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Larry Murante, performs at 7:30 p.m. No cover, donations appreciated.

• The Jazz in the Olympics Society, under the directorship of Gary Sorenson has reacquired the Jazz in the Olympics event scheduled next year for the first weekend in April.
