Master Gardeners to talk growing tomatoes

PORT ANGELES — Advice about growing tomatoes successfully in the North Olympic Peninsula’s maritime climate will be presented from noon to 1 p.m. today.

Master Gardeners Audreen Williams and Jan Bartron will speak at this edition of the Green Thumbs Garden Tips.

Bartron and Williams will discuss cultivar selection; planting and plant care; and the basics of soil nutrition, adequate irrigation and pruning of tomato plants.

They also will talk about support systems like staking, trellising and caging, and techniques for extending the growing season with hoop houses, walls o’water and the Oregon State University model.

Bartron and Williams are both graduates of the 2012 WSU Clallam County Master Gardener program.

They share responsibilities for the double plots and blueberry patch at the Fifth Street garden in Port Angeles which they care for on Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon; gardeners are welcome to stop by with questions while maintaining social distancing.

First-time users of Zoom are asked to login 10 minutes early to ensure the connection is working properly, speaker volume is adequate, microphone is muted so that attendees cannot hear background noise and video is off.

The Green Thumbs Garden Tips education series, sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners, is held on the second and fourth Thursday each month through October.

In November, December and January, one lecture is offered.
