LAPUSH — A host of tribal traditions will be showcased when Quileute Days makes its annual run July 16-18.
The tribe hopes that locals and tourists alike will join in on the fun and games in learning about its “History Through Our Traditions,” as this year’s days are themed.
“The whole event is in the spirit of Quileute,” said organizer Jamie Hart.
“The spirit is all about giving and hospitality, and that is the meaning behind everything that is done.
“This isn’t just a party at LaPush. It is more than that.
“It is not only the giving of resources, but giving of yourself.”
The event is primarily run by volunteers, she said.
The event will feature three days of stick games — a traditional betting game — bingo and poker.
The stick games will begin at 6 p.m. July 16 and 3 p.m. on July 17 and 18.
The games will run late into the night.
“Bingo, too, will go for many hours — in a way it is almost like the last man standing,” Hart said.
Hart said that the tribe is also welcoming Twilight fans to learn more about the traditional culture.
A Jacob Black and Bella Swan look-alike contest will cater to the fans of the book.
Edward Cullen — the vampire hero of the books — isn’t allowed on the reservation per the rules of the treaty laid out in the book.
A baseball tournament, horseshoe games, salmon bakes, street dance and more will ensure that fun is available for all, Hart said.
A parade will run at noon on Saturday, July 17.
“We’ll also have a salmon bake [starting at noon on Saturday, July 17, and Sunday, July 18] and we’ll keep going until we run out of fish,” Hart said.
“The traditionally prepared salmon is really amazing.”
Each day will begin with a blessing of events.
The days will also be special because the tribe will be preparing for the annual Canoe Journey to the Makah.
The canoe journey will begin July 19, the Monday after Quileute Days.
