Sourdough bread, vintage trailers, photographer meet-and-greet among Peninsula attractions

Sourdough bread making, a gathering of vintage trailers and a meet-and-greet with a published photographer are among the upcoming activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

Artist trading cards

North Olympic Library System will host artist trading card events in Port Angeles and Sequim.

The events will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., and from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Artist trading cards are 2½-inches-by-3½-inches and are decorated for trading.

Each artist will make six duplicate cards. One will be displayed by the library system — which oversees public libraries in Port Angeles, Sequim, Forks and Clallam Bay — and each of the other five will be mailed to one of 11 other libraries across the nation.

When the library receives cards from other libraries, they will be displayed until Jan. 23, when each participant may pick up the person’s original card and the five cards exchanged from other libraries.

Teens and adults are invited to this free program.

Cards and art supplies will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring materials as well.

Sourdough classes

Victoria Redhead Miller will lead free sourdough starter classes in Clallam Bay and Forks.

The classes will be at 1 p.m. today at Clallam Bay Library, 16990 state Highway 112, and at 4 p.m. Saturday at Forks Library, 171 Forks Ave.

Registration is required to attend. To register, visit the North Olympic Library System website at www.nols.org. The library system oversees public libraries in Clallam Bay, Forks, Port Angeles and Sequim.

Sourdough starter — which is activated by wild yeast — can be used for making a lot more than just loaf breads and pizza, according to a news release.

Participants are invited to bring their own wide-mouthed, pint-sized jars and a lid, but jars will be available at the event.

Veterans’ memorial

PORT ANGELES — A veterans memorial is planned from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. today at Veterans Park, 217 S. Lincoln St.

The monthly memorial is conducted by Marine Corps League, Mount Olympus Detachment of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Patriot Riders and National Guard.

The memorial includes reading the names of local veterans, ringing a replica of the Liberty Bell after each name, presenting a flag to a family member of one of the deceased, a rifle salute, a bugler playing taps and a piper.

Nuclear meeting

PORT ANGELES — Washington Coalition to Stop the New Nuclear Arms Race will host a meeting from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. today in the Carver Room of Port Angeles Library.

The guest speaker will be Lilly Adams from Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility.

The public is invited to this free meeting at the library at 2210 S. Peabody St.

Photographer meeting

PORT ANGELES — Olympic National Park and its nonprofit partner Discover Your Northwest will host a special meet, greet and signature event featuring local, renowned large-format photographer Ross Hamilton.

The event will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Olympic National Park Visitor Center at 3002 Mount Angeles Road.

Hamilton has long championed the beauty of Olympic National Park and the Olympic Peninsula.

His coffee table book, “The Wilderness Trilogy,” with text authored by Janet Scharf, as well as his scenic wall calendars, posters, bookmarks, notes and postcards depict the wonders of the Peninsula and the park. These items will be available for purchase in the Olympic National Park Visitor Center bookstore.

The bookstore is operated by Discover Your Northwest, a nonprofit partner of the National Park Service that supports park programs through sales proceeds.

Genealogy society

PORT ANGELES — The Genealogy Society of Clallam County will host an open house at the society’s research center from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The public is invited to look over the facility at 402 E. Lauridsen Blvd. or do research using the organization’s books and subscription data bases. Refreshments will be served.

An “I Know Nothing About Genealogy” beginners class will be offered from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. There is no cost for the class, but donations are welcome.

The Genealogy Society of Clallam County is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.

Stand Down 2018

PORT ANGELES — Stand Down 2018 will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Clallam County Fairgrounds.

Stand Down is a one-day operation that is held three times per year to support homeless veterans, veterans in need and their immediate, dependent family members.

This free event at the fairgrounds at 1608 W. 16th St. is open to all veterans and brings more than 20 organizations together into one place to help connect veterans with services.

Some of the services available are medical and dental screening, colon and breast cancer screening, housing information, employment and education assistance, veteran benefits, counseling, legal aid, haircuts, food and clothing.

This all-volunteer operation is funded by donations and grants and all money is used for veterans.

Free transportation to the Stand Down is available on Clallam and Jefferson Transit buses.

FORKS — The Forks Elks Lodge will host bingo games at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Fall Fizzle

JOYCE — Vintage trailer owners and enthusiasts are invited to the campground at Salt Creek Recreational Area this weekend for the fifth annual Vintage Trailer Fall Fizzle.

On Saturday, there will be a breakfast potluck at 9 a.m. and pumpkin carving and rock painting from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

There will be a heated shelter for the potluck and decorating festivities.

SEQUIM — The Olympic Peninsula Authors group will host a launch party for the publication of “In the Words of Olympic Peninsula Authors, Volume II” at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Edited by Heidi Hansen and Linda B. Myers, the 300-plus-page book includes short stories, prose and poems by 30 local authors who are awarding-winning, published and/or newly recognized for their talent. All selections in the book involve life on the Olympic Peninsula in one way or another.

The anthology will be available for purchase at $20, tax included.

Attendees can ask questions of all the authors and have their books signed. Beverages may be purchased; light refreshments will be served.

Sequim garden club

SEQUIM — Cheri Bricker-Burnett of the Bellevue Botanical Society will be the guest speaker at the Sequim Prairie Garden Club’s next meeting on Monday.

Bricker-Burnett will teach how to take ordinary fencing wire and create functional art. She also will demonstrate her art using special homemade tools, and about how to create artistic pieces by using simple needle-nosed pliers.

PORT TOWNSEND — The Humane Society will host a half-kilometer Bless the Beasts and Children fun run at noon Sunday.

The run will start at the Port Townsend Brewery, 330 10th St., and end at the Pourhouse, 2231 Washington St.

The proceeds will benefit several Jefferson County nonprofit organizations — the Humane Society, Jumping Mouse Children’s Center, the YMCA’s “Building Futures” Program and the Sea Scouts.

The $25 suggested donation includes race entry, T-shirt, drink token, midway snacks and entertainment.

There is no charge for children and pets.

Costumes are encouraged.

Volcano lecture

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Aero Museum will host a presentation by John Pallister from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
