WEEKEND: Marine center offers gift shop sale, other events this weekend

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Marine Science Center offers special events this weekend.

The center’s annual holiday gift shop sale will be held in the Natural History Exhibit from noon to 4 p.m. today through Sunday.

Discounts will be offered on all regularly priced items. Gift certificates will be available for the gift shop as well as marine science center memberships, with all proceeds supporting the center’s educational programs.

Fort Worden exhibit

A singalong, children’s book reading and fun activities will be offered in the center’s Natural History Exhibit at Fort Worden State Park at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Steven Urbanc, a volunteer with the marine science center, will sing his song, “Scoop the Poop,” followed by an interactive reading of the children’s book Granny’s Clan: A Tale of Wild Orcas, by Sally Hodson.

Copies of the book will be for sale, and a book-signing will follow the program.

Bird migration cruise

A late fall/early winter bird migration cruise will be held Saturday, with another cruise set for Monday, Dec. 31.

The trips leave from Port Townsend’s Point Hudson Marina at 1 p.m. and return at 4 p.m.

Depending on the weather, the cruise will go to Protection Island or south in the Oak Bay-Port Ludlow direction.

These special boat expeditions, in collaboration with Puget Sound Express, will give participants an opportunity to see and learn about numerous bird species as well as other wildlife.

Wildlife commentary

Cruises are aboard an enclosed motor-yacht. Naturalists from the marine science center area will be onboard to comment on wildlife.

Tickets are $55 per person or $50 for members of the marine science center, Burke Museum, Audubon or the Washington Ornithological Society.

For reservations, phone the marine science center at 360-385-5582 or 800-566-3932, or email cruises@ptmsc.org.
