WEEKEND: Rock ‘n’ roll, country to benefit Peninsula animals

PORT ANGELES — Saturday will be a day for dogs, cats, country and rock ’n’ roll on the waterfront at The Landing mall.

Rosalie Secord of the Luck of the Draw, a country band born and bred in Port Angeles, decided awhile back that she wanted to bring the community’s musicians together for a benefit.

Her chosen cause is the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, which is jammed with nearly 100 cats and 30 dogs, Executive Director Mary Beth Wegener said.

So Secord got busy — and got nine bands together to play from noon until 8 p.m. Saturday inside The Landing mall at 115 E. Railroad Ave. in Port Angeles.

Admission is free, while Secord and Wegener hope people will both dance and donate.

The Humane Society’s shelter needs dog, cat and kitten food, of course, Wegener said, since adult cats and kittens “just seem to keep coming in.”

Nonclumping cat litter “is something we go through an awful lot of,” she added.

Donations of that stuff are welcome at The Landing on Saturday and at the Humane Society, which is open from noon to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays at 2105 W. U.S. Highway 101.

Information about donations and pet adoptions is also available at 360-457-8206 and www.CChumane.com.

For part of Saturday, Wegener said, the Humane Society will bring some of the shelter’s adoptable dogs and cats over to The Landing.

She hopes to find homes for the felines, of course, and for the canines, since the shelter is nearing its capacity of 35 dogs.

“I think it’s going to be a really fun time,” Wegener said of the day of music.

Secord added she wanted to challenge other local bands to join Luck of the Draw in this fundraiser, and the response was vigorous.

The lineup goes like this:

■ Noon: Barry Burnett plays mellow rock.

■ 1 p.m.: The Old Sidekicks play bluegrass.

■ 2 p.m.: The Night Beats play rock ’n’ roll.

■ 3 p.m.: Les Wamboldt and Old Tyme Country play the obvious.

■ 4 p.m.: The Black Diamond Fiddle Club Kids play folk and traditional tunes.

■ 4:30 p.m.: The Travelin’ Duo, Ron and Dianne Johnson, play country and Christmas songs.

■ 5 p.m.: Rusty Duke and Crash play country.

■ 6 p.m.: Country Gold plays country.

■ 7 p.m.: Luck of the Draw, with guest yodeler Wanda Bumgarner and guitarist Joe Dziak, play blues, bluegrass, old-time music and rock.

Refreshments will be available all day, Secord said, and she and Peninsula Daily News music columnist John Nelson are working on assembling a silent auction and a prize drawing.

Luck of the Draw does a lot of benefit concerts, Secord added, but this one is notable for the sheer number of musicians under one roof.

“We love to get the bands together. We’re not into this macho stuff,” she said. “We’re all family.”
