As the seasons change and Memorial Day approaches, a small but dedicated team is hard at work behind the scenes to prepare Sequim View, Dungeness, and Mount Angeles cemeteries for this solemn day of remembrance.
While visitors may see only the pristine, Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, Funeral Director Cathleen McCormick notes that “the beauty of these grounds is no accident – it’s a labor of love, respect and dedication to those who served.”
At Sequim View Cemetery, Mount Angeles Memorial Park and Dungeness Cemetery, a two-person crew spends weeks meticulously readying the grounds. It starts with extensive mowing and trimming, ensuring every pathway is clear and every resting place is cared for.
Winter storm debris is collected and removed, making way for the fresh greenery that marks the renewal of spring. The process is both physically demanding and deeply meaningful, every action a tribute to those who served their country.
Beyond the daily maintenance, local organizations play a crucial role in Memorial Day preparations.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Daughters of the American Revolution coordinate flag placements and a small memorial service at Mount Angeles Memorial Park and Sequim View Cemetery.
Each flag represents a life lived in service, and ensuring that no veteran is overlooked is a priority. Families of veterans who do not receive a flag are encouraged to contact the cemetery office, where the office manager works to ensure their loved ones are honored.
This year, there’s a notable addition to the landscape. Three new niche banks have been placed around the flagpole in the Veterans’ Circle, the highest point of the cemetery where the Memorial Day service takes place each year. These niche banks, engraved with service emblems, provide additional space for veterans while serving as a focal point of commemoration.
In recognition of this special time, the cemetery is offering a Memorial Day special on these new niche banks. Those interested in learning more can reach out to the cemetery representative.
While Memorial Day visitors stepping onto the immaculate grounds may not see the countless hours of effort poured into every detail, they can feel the deep respect and gratitude woven into each blade of grass and every carefully placed flag.
This Memorial Day, take a moment to appreciate not only those who served but also those who make these places of remembrance truly special.
