Capturing the raw beauty of the Pacific Northwest is no small challenge. Many artists have tried over the decades and when successful – when their art speaks to that little piece of our soul forever changed by the magic of the Pacific coastline – it’s worthy of recognition.
Joining the ranks of artists who’ve successfully captured a piece of the PNWs wild, raw beauty is Cabled Fiber & Yarn in Port Angeles. Their Distracted by Yarn, Pacific Northwest Line captures the diversity and vibrance of the region perfectly in its 34 curated colors of hand-dyed yarn, inspired by the Olympic Peninsula.
“Port Angeles is the gateway to the Olympic National Park,” says MarySue French, the shop’s founder and co-owner. “And we act as a gateway ourselves for many local fiber artists, supporting them from the beginning of their fiber art journey and long after by ensuring they have everything needed for their projects, from tools to inspiration.”
The most popular colors in the PNW line are LaPoel a picnic spot at Lake Crescent, Mountain Lupin, Freshwater Bay, The Beach at Salt Creek and Heart of the Hills, French says, though she uses the term ‘most popular’ loosely. The entire PNW lineup has stood out as the shop’s best sellers, not only with locals but with online orders and visitors wishing to take home a little piece of the Olympic Peninsula. Since its inception, Cabled Fiber & Yarn has added two colors each year and in 2024 those were Lichen and Olympic Fungi. They have even had locals and visitors to the Peninsula provide pictures to use as inspiration for new colorways.
La Poel, a small picnic area on the south side of Lake Crescent (shaded by the steep mountains to the south), but the views from the picnic tables and the small beach are amazing. The yarn reflects the gravel beach and the branches silhouetted by the variable ever-changing blues of the lake.
Mountain Lupin is another popular favorite, Cabled Fiber & Yarn co-owner Beth Witters says. Wildflowers are a colorful part of the Olympic Peninsula scenery. The meadows around the upper parking lot of Hurricane Ridge provide easy lupin viewing in the spring and early summer as do the Hurricane Hill and Klahhane Ridge Trails.
