PORT ANGELES — Police are investigating a family-related shooting that resulted in injuries to two men Monday night.

A woman and her grandchild who live at the residence in the 2200 block of South Chase Street were not injured but were in the street when police arrived at 9:48 p.m. Monday, Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith said.

James J. Barnett, 55, was in stable condition with multiple gunshot wound this morning at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, he said.

Michael E. Johnson, 57, was treated and released at Olympic Medical Center, Smith said.

A woman and her 6-year-old granddaughter were at the residence at the time and were not injured, Sgt. Barbara McFall said.

The case is being classified as domestic violence because all three adults lived at the same address.

Johnson had been staying at the house where Barnett, the woman and her grandchild lived, McFall said.

Barnett allegedly kicked open the locked door to the bedroom where Johnson was staying, Smith said.

Johnson allegedly shot Barnett, McFall said.

A fight also occurred during the altercation in which some of Johnson’s teeth were knocked out.

“Both had injuries,” McFall said.

Said Smith: “There was violence, there was an altercation; they are putting all that together.”

After officers arrived, they established a perimeter around the residence and began calling in to the two men.

Officers were able to make verbal contact with one of the men and eventually talked him into coming out of the residence.

Officers then entered the residence and located the man with the gunshot wound in one of the bedrooms.
